This is a portrite of a SouthWest Mexican Indian woman. In 1909, in Morelos, the peasant leader, Emiliano Zapata, gathered together an army of thousands of agricultural workers and landless peasants to attack the haciendas and reclaim lost lands. This developed into the Mexican Civil War, which broke out in January 1911 under "Pancho" Villa in Chihuahua, Northern Mexico. My grand parents were a part of that war. My grandmother would cook and take food to the soldiers.

As the battles became more engrossed my grandparents along with many others decided to leave Mexico and go North to California. They settled in, what was at the time a the newly developing city, Los Angeles. The war in Mexico ended in July 1914.

My grandmother was a Mexican Indian. On my mother's side, my grandfather was of Mexican/Basque desent. On my father's side, my grandmother was German/Mexican and his father was from Arizona, a mixture of Mexican/and some family members say perhaps a Cajun Black influence too. My children's father was Scottish/German and my grandchildren some are part Asian. We are American's in every sense of the word - a perfect example of the U.S melting pot.

This poem depicts the thoughts and attitude of my grandmother and is a true little story of something that once happened. She was a fabulous gardener and had the ability to grow anything in the red clay dirt of East Los Angeles. She had a sharp tongue and wit. She was a healer, and she breastfed many children from the neighborhood whose mothers could not, for some reason, feed their babies. She bore twenty-three children. Everyone who knew her admired her. My grandfather was an iron worker.

Old Indian Woman
.
Old woman dressed in tribal garb.
Stands amid a field in song.
Raises up her arms in praise
to sun, and seeded clouds,
for the idea of her crop,
before a seed is sown.
She sang; "This is the seed within the seed,
complete although not grown"
She takes each little tiny seed,
lays it to its bed.
The Sun gives warmth, clouds pour rain,
the seeds began to grow.
Each day she gently cleared away the weeds,
tossed rocks at crows.
Chanted an Indian verse
declaring Earth and man as one,
the sun, rain,
everything that grows. A drunken man in passing, said to her,
"I say,
Old woman, what a waste of time.
You will not yield any crops,
in that pile of clay!" In a grim reply she did say;
"If I should deem to plant a drunk
on his head today,
he too will sprout roots,
in this dry red clay." Old woman, chants her song,
for a month and a day.
Crops grew in abundance,
and come harvest day,
the drunk again in passing said;
"Well I'll be dammed!
Old woman, it's a miracle
that anything would ever grow
in that dry red clay." .

In ze United States ze program has been broadcastz on ze PBS intermittentz over ze past couples of yearz und is nou availablez on ze DVDs. Is zat not greatz?

Herr Atkinson most of ze time plays un selfish, sometimez ingenious, und likeable buffoon zat frequently getz into ze hilarious situations due to his various schemes and contrivances.

Ze Movies are physical comedies, vith very little dialogue. Ze humour largely comes from his original solutions to any problems and ze totalz disregard for ze otherz vhen he is solving anyz of ze problems.

Vhat more canz I say, I love ze guy! you must see him in actionz.
